There was a clear objective to achieve here – the spaces had to be modern and fresh, up to the minute and set to appeal to the boarding students. However, as is often the case, the boarding houses themselves were very traditional, heritage type buildings with plenty of character of their own and it was imperative that this was recognised and respected. In conjunction with this, the individual house identities needed to be celebrated and identified within the design narrative to give a clear sense of ownership and belonging to the resident students.
