Marlborough School – SEND Classroom, ICT Space & Staff Room

Marlborough School – SEND Classroom, ICT Space & Staff Room

Marlborough Primary School’s refurbishment created three distinct spaces: a SEND classroom, an ICT classroom, and a staff room. Each area was designed to respond to the changing needs of the school, with a particular focus on creating more supportive, flexible environments for pupils who find traditional classrooms difficult. Envoplan transformed an unused classroom into a calming SEND space for pupils aged 5 to 11, while also delivering a practical ICT suite, and a refreshed staff room that supports collaboration, preparation, and day-to-day wellbeing.

The Vision

As the number of pupils requiring SEND support had increased, the school recognised the need for more than a dedicated sensory room. Many children needed a space where they could decompress, regulate, move, and focus while remaining within a learning environment. The vision was to create a classroom that felt calm, inclusive, and purposeful, with flexible furniture, sensory details, and quieter retreat areas that could support pupils across different ages, needs, and learning styles.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Envoplan transformed an unused classroom into a SEND environment shaped around comfort, movement, and sensory regulation. Acoustic cladding was added to one corner, while a deep, varying-height pile carpet improved sound quality and introduced a tactile sensory feature, allowing children to remove their shoes and feel the texture underfoot. The room also includes varied table and chair sizes, wobble stools, a height-adjustable table, soft seating, and a Sensory Nook with adjustable lighting, giving pupils different ways to settle, engage, and retreat when needed.

Designing for Practical Learning

The SEND classroom was designed to make learning more accessible through choice and flexibility. Wobble stools support pupils who benefit from movement, particularly those with ADHD, while the height-adjustable table and varied seating allow the space to adapt to different activities and age groups. The ICT classroom takes a more structured approach, with computer workstations arranged for focused digital learning, clear supervision, and efficient circulation. Together, the two classrooms balance specialist support with practical teaching requirements, creating spaces that are both functional and responsive.

The Impact

The completed refurbishment gives Marlborough a more considered set of spaces for pupils and staff. The SEND classroom now provides a calm, flexible setting where children can decompress, focus, and learn in ways that better support neurodivergent needs, sensory regulation, and wellbeing. The ICT classroom offers a practical environment for digital learning, while the staff room has been reimagined with varied furniture, improved layout, and clearer zones for relaxation, collaboration, and preparation. Across the project, Envoplan helped create a warmer, more adaptable school environment shaped around everyday use.
