The State of Boarding Spaces
The idea behind our research
Our goal was to uncover the untapped potential of your boarding areas, transforming them into thriving environments that foster positive experiences for your students and drive your school’s success.
- Uncover the untapped potential of your boarding spaces
- Receive an appraisal full of quick wins and longer-term solutions for how to enhance your spaces
- Optimise your facilities, promote well-being, boost cognition, and support neurodiversity.
Are school learning environments really meeting the needs of today's students?
how do leaders feel about their boarding spaces?
What are they looking to change?
These were just some of the questions we set out to ask in The State of Boarding Spaces – a piece of research that combined:
An online survey of 50+ senior leaders across boarding schools
In-depth conversations with leading education thinkers
Our experience of working with 800+ schools over nearly 50 years
This research is incredibly valuable, and comes at a crucial time for school leaders as we challenge ourselves to make our education the best it can be

What we found
The results show the same trend identified in our learning spaces research, one of untapped
potential. However, boarding schools are clear that they want to use their boarding spaces to
specifically focus on wellbeing, even though this wasn’t the lowest category.
Below is a snapshot of some of the key findings:
63%
of leaders are unsure if their boarding spaces are helping students reach their full potential.
70%
of leaders are unsure if their boarding spaces are a main reason for parents to choose their school.
