Newsletter – The Role of Routines

How Important Are Routines For Your Learning Environment?

Imagine if you could increase your learners’ attention, let teachers focus on what is important and strengthen your students’ safety, support and academic success.

According to Impact – the journal of Chartered College of Teaching – in a learning environment that has been purposefully designed, routines can indeed be implemented to enhance positive peer behaviour and culture, engage learners and give teachers the ability to deliver effective teaching at all times. Good routines comprise straightforward, uncomplicated actions that are consistently put in place. They are simple to follow, with specific rewards and consequences, and are repeated regularly. Teachers and educators need to recognise the benefits of everyday actions that need to be persistently implemented, often prior to any gains in learning. However, setting routines in place and explaining why and how these are to be delivered will establish a fundamentally productive culture as students will start to inherently choose affirmative behaviour.

However, it is important to note that if routines are not adhered to or simply put in place without explanation or communication they may be far less effective.

An agreed set of routines in place will benefit teachers and students alike; in a group setting with young people who listen to both their peers and their teachers, it is vital to set the rules of routines so students know what is expected of them at all times. Younger students are more likely to listen to their teachers whilst older pupils are more likely to be influenced by their peer group. By clearly showing the intended outcomes of routines, educators will find their students’ attention more focused on learning and this will lead to a much greater chance of success.
